It doesn’t say “formerly known” (as, in the past), it says “formally known.” The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the formal name of the Church. It is not a common name or nickname.

The official name of the church is still The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

People refer to the church as the “Mormon Church” because its members are commonly known as Mormons.
